Hey Chris, can I call you Can-Je from now on?

The New York Times Play magazine ran a cover feature on Steve Nash today. After reading the article, I learned that Nash is taller than I expected (and still look like a midget standing next to Yao Ming) and that Nash is pretty much the same age as Chris. I also found this:
“Steve Nash” the self-effacing Canadian long shot whose life story had been puréed into an edifying fable about Chasing Your Dreams and Working Hard and Always Giving Back, and in some parts of his home country had been polished to such a saintly sheen that people called him Can-Je, short for “Canadian Jesus.”
Urm ... is this true. I mean, who exactly calls him Can-Je? Like, which of his junior high friends duped Chip Brown into including it in the article?!

Can-Je? WTF?! Where did this come from? I've never heard that. Maybe in his inner, inner circle of friendship (meaning three people) that exists. It's news to me. Can-Je. Really?

Don't overlook the only thing more ridiculous than the Can-Je moniker is the fact that it's short for "Canadian Jesus." I really don't know he was known as the Canadian Jesus. I want to chase down Chip Brown or the factchecker (there's got to be one, it's the NYT!) and ask where they dug this out.

My roommate, who has bee following Nash since his first Phoenix stint is equally baffled. So we're not alone.

Your roomie is a basketball fan? He/she must be busting at the seams over the Celtics this year, and the fact that their season gets underway tomorrow. I know I am.

I know! Between the Sox, the Patriots and the Celtics, Boston is having a sports renaissance. (I hear the Boston College football team is doing very well too.) The only blemish is the Bruins. What a sad sack of suck they are.

And yeah, roomie used to work in sports TV production in Manila and big time NBA fan. She used to get sent to All-Star games, too. Pretty sweet. When I told her about your sneakers, she starts slobbering.

After some research (read: 5 seconds of Googling) I think I found the "Can-Je" source.

"Everyone here calls him Can-Je," said Sean O'Brien, a veteran producer on EA Sports' March Madness series.

Also, when you Google Can-Je now, The Crap Shack is like the 7th search result. We're big time!
